Spotlight: Summer Energy Saving Tips
The Midwest summer is starting to heat up! With the current heatwave and temperatures likely to continue to increase, MidAmerican Energy gives customers some great energy-saving tips.
- Set your thermostat a little higher. For every degree above 78 degrees, you reduce your electrical usage by 3-5%.
- Close shades and drapes during the heat of the day.
- If applicable, use your programmable thermostat to increase the desired temperature while you’re away or asleep.
- Check your air conditioner filters monthly and clean or replace them as needed. Removing dirt and dust improves operating efficiency.
- Keep registers clean and clear of furniture and other obstructions to make sure air can circulate freely in your home.
- Fans use less energy than air conditioners. A portable fan can spread cool air into other rooms and down hallways.
- Reverse the direction of ceiling fans to run counterclockwise to draw air upward to cool the room.
- Use heat-generating appliances like ovens, dishwashers, and clothes dryers early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler.
